Dear Parkside Families-

Today, students were presented a lesson on a our school wide positive behavior program!

This past year, staff has been collaborating to create an incentive program to encourage, teach and promote safe and responsible behavior guidelines for our students. Our launch today included a student and staff created video, displaying desirable, and humorous undesirable behaviors in the common area on our campus, such as the hallways, stairwells, lunch lines, front office and cafeteria. A short lesson followed, and students were then presented with "Panther Paws", which they can earn by showing Respectful, Responsible and Safe behavior.

We are planning weekly prize drawings that currently include free dress and free cross country passes. Monthly drawing prizes will include gift cards!

Please see attachment for details and ask your student about it!

Fondly,

Team Parkside

Dear Parkside Families,

Please remember to take our district climate survey.

The Parent survey is also posted on the SBPSD website, and is available in both Spanish and English.  Our goal is to have more 50% of our parents respond to the survey.  For families who have children enrolled in more than one school, they may choose to respond to the survey more than once - but it is not required.

Please respond by January 19th. Your input is valuable!

Parkside Families,

Please review the important message from the San Mateo County Health System:

SMC Alert - San Mateo County's Alert System

San Mateo County Health System officials are urging everyone six months and older to get a flu vaccine. Local emergency rooms are reporting increased flu activity.

Though we are a few months into flu season, getting the vaccine now is still the best way to protect yourself and your family.

Also remember to cover your mouth when you cough, wash your hands often, and avoid going to work when sick.

🎶Music for Students*Read ASAP🎶

Calling all incoming 2017-18 Capuchino Freshmen students and parents! It's not too late to join the amazing music program for next year.

Students: continue your musical adventure with a fun and creative group of students under the direction of the wonderful Mr. Souza. There are many opportunities to perform and compete, including marching band reviews, CMEA festivals, Spirit Rallies, cheering on the home team at football and basketball games, and much more. All of the music groups excelled at competitions this year.

Parents: Join a welcoming Music Booster group who has (almost) as much fun as the students at the many events throughout the year. Check out the Friends of Capuchino Music Facebook page.

Next year, as well as Band, String Orchestra, and Choir, there is an exciting opportunity to shine in Capuchino's Jazz Band, which will be offered as a separate class to students concurrently enrolled in a performance class, if there is enough interest. We need saxophones, trumpets, trombones, rhythm section, piano, vocals, and bass. This year's Jazz Band put on a great performance in the Spring Concert, with a few special touches that surprised even Mr. Souza. Check out the videos on Friends of Capuchino Music Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/brianjing.cayaban/posts/1605223129520414 https://www.facebook.com/groups/300268303689829/permalink/407317392984919/). Please let your counselor know if you are interested as soon as possible to ensure that the Jazz Band Class is available next year.

Thank you for the Spring Concert

A great big thanks to everyone! The Spring Concerts were amazing. Our young musicians played beautifully at both performances.

Thanks to all of the music students and their wonderful parents who support and encourage them.

Thank you to their incredible music teachers, Ms. Mahfouz and Ms. Ciana, and Mr. Neumann whose hard work and dedication to the students is evident by what they have accomplished.

Lots of thanks to Ms. Dees, Mr. Case, Mr. Smith, Judy Spooner and the Parkside staff and teachers who help in the preparations and are so understanding and supportive.

Special appreciation to the terrific Parkside custodial staff who work so tirelessly behind the scenes.

Thank you to Ron Rugel, Kimberli Moffitt-Tsui, and Cristina Prado for their concert photography and Virginia and Dave Teng for their work on the beautiful program booklet.

A great big thank you to the wonderful volunteers who staffed the concession stand, picked up and served dinner to the students, monitored the holding rooms, scanned tickets at the door, and sold raffle tickets.

Thank you to everyone who provided snacks to sell or donated toward the purchase of pizza to feed the students.

Thanks to all who pitched in afterward to fold and stack 600 chairs in just a few minutes and who came on Saturday to finish moving stands and instruments.

Thanks to everyone who helped in any way no matter how small. This was a group effort and it wouldn't have been possible without everyone’s contribution.

THANK YOU!!!

Dear Parkside Parents,

The Parkside PTO is in search of parents to support a couple of our spring traditions.  These activities offer meaningful opportunities to volunteer for the school and have fun at the same time. They are especially great for parents who want to help out but may be reluctant to sign up for a year-long commitment, as these are for a specific event.

* DAY OF THE CHILD, May 20th. This San Bruno Park School District event that will be held at  San Bruno Park .   DAY OF THE CHILD celebrates reading and children.  All of the San Bruno Park School District schools are asked to participate.  I need a volunteer to represent Parkside at this event.  It will be from 1pm-4pm.  I can also break down the time commitment into two shifts to accommodate two people.    For example - 1pm -2:30pm & 2:30pm - 4pm.  Duties include staffing a booth and interacting with the kids.  Activities will be provided at the booth.  PLEASE HELP!   Please emailpamela_gamble@yahoo.com for more information.

* FUN IN THE SUN, June 2nd.  This is a Year-End Activity held at Parkside.  This is a social event for the kids featuring games, good foods, and lots more.  Veronica Mason is the chair of the event.  If you are interested in volunteering, please email her at veronicamason2710@gmail.com

Parkside needs it parent community to help make it a strong school.  Please step up and volunteer for one of these events.

Thank you!

Hello to Our Precious Music Students and Family,

A reminder that you are signing up for high school classes tomorrow or very soon.

A few reminders as to how important it is to NOT quit music:

*Long-term, daily commitment without quitting (not stopping music)

*Team-work

*Independence

*Multi-tasking skills

***MUSIC is a MAIN subject where you combine art with all classes and sport- it's an all-inclusive class that you working daily towards a goal and achieve- what colleges and employers want!

1)  College and job applications- VERY OFTEN grant music students first priority as they show many desirable qualities.

2)  Friends- You have music friends waiting for you at your new school and will make many new, successful, good-influence friends to help project you into a great future!

3) Travel- Musicians always travel to fun and educational places that help give you a well-rounded life and have help if needed.

4) Brain & Performance- Many, MANY studies show the improvement across subjects and in life due to the proven benefits of music.

5) Health- Music is not only an outlet for emotions such as stress when times are tough but also a way to express yourself to have fun and when words aren't enough.

6) Financial Bonus- Many musicians get scholarships and financial support in college for being a musician!

Here is a reminder of just a few of the skills and traits you exhibit every day that you are working hard as a music student and member of society:

*Patience

*Energy/Stamina

*Charisma

*Additional skill/extracurricular/Arts- something to add to the

  standard skill-set

*Diversity

*Caring for others/community/Respect

*Many more...

And if anyone needs a reminder as to how much multi-tasking you are doing and why people are impressed with you:

At the SAME TIME(only to name a FEW)...

diaphragmatic breathing, fingers, posture, tapping, theory (key signatures etc.), reading notes, reading rhythms, thinking numbers, tongue, loud/soft, long/short (style & articulation), phrasing (musical sentences), high/low, embouchure, listening, tuning/constantly adjusting, focus, accuracy, playing, self-control, instrument maintenance & cleaning, musicianship/flow, and more.

Please trust us and prepare as the best is yet to come!

What is WEB?

WEB stands for Where Everybody Belongs.  WEB Leaders are 8th graders who are positive role models for incoming 6th grade students and who have been successful at our middle school.  WEB Leaders’ communication skills, leadership potential, responsibility, and personality have helped them succeed in the middle school environment, and the lessons they have learned should be shared to help others succeed.  You could have a tremendous influence on our new students and you will learn many valuable leadership skills in the process.  PLUS, it will be FUN! J

What does a WEB Leader do?  WEB Leaders are trained to work with incoming sixth graders and other new studnets entering our school next fall.  After training, WEB Leaders will run sixth grade orientation before school starts in August.  At orientation, each WEB Leader will be given a small group of sixth graders to work with that day and will be asked to befriend and help that group during the first week of school with any challenges they may face. Additionally, throughout the school year, WEB Leaders will meet again with their student groups to touch base, discuss problems, and plan social activities.  We know the more contact a sixth grader has with his/her WEB Leader, the more successful the sixth grader will be.

For more information:

Come to one of the informational meetings to find out more and pick up an application.

Hope to see you at one of the meetings!  All students are welcome!

Informational meetings have been scheduled for:

Tuesday, March 28 at lunch, in Room 16 from 12:20-12:45

Wednesday, March 29, at lunch, in Room 16 from 12:20-12:45

If you have additional questions or cannot attend one of the meetings, please see Ms. Leary in the counseling office (room 16).  WE NEED YOU!!!!  IT WILL BE FUN!

Aerosols can act as a trigger to an (often) serious asthma attack, or bring on a severe migraine in a sensitive individual. Accidental contact with one’s eyes can also have dangerous effects to their visual health as well. We want to prevent any of these potential situations from happening to any student on our campus. Please support us in this effort by making sure that your child is using only stick or roll-on deodorants at school.

Teachers have been asked to confiscate any aerosol products found at school and bring them to the Assistant Principal. Parents will be informed that the products have been collected from their son or daughter and that they can call into the school and collect the product.

Thank you for considering the health and safety of others.

CELL Phone Policy Update-

Recently, the Parkside staff reviewed cell phone usage and safety with the adults and students on campus.  The following guidelines and consequences were carefully chosen to support the safety of the students, and to prevent any misuse of texting, photos or social media.

General Telephone Guidlines:

Use of the office telephone is limited to cases of emergency and then only with the permission of office personnel. During school hours, students must have a pass to the office to use the phone. Phone call messages to students during the school hours are inappropriate and disruptive.

Personal Cell Phone Guidelines:

Allowable-

Before and after school outside of school buildings

In class, as permitted by classroom teacher for instructional purposes

Not Allowed: (Including earbuds, headphones)

Inside a school building (Classroom, Locker rooms, Hallways, Gym, Office, Cafeteria, etc.)

During school hours, 8:15-2:51 (1:50 Thursdays)

During passing time or lunch time

Progressive Discipline actions will be followed should a student be out of compliance-

1st Offense: Phone will be turned in and then picked up by student at the end of day either in the office or with the adult staff member that has it.

2nd Offense: Phone will be turned in and picked up by the parent in the office* after school.

3rd Offense:  Phone will be checked into and out of the office*, daily.

Note* Phones will be turned off while the in the office at all times.

This is the latest Student Handbook for Parkside.

The latest edition was sparked by a change in the Dress Code; namely, black trousers are now acceptable!

Say it loud- wear black and be proud!
