Dear PKIS Students,

This week we will clean out the hallway lockers!

  • 8th Grade will clean Tuesday
  • 7th Grade will clean Wednesday
  • 6th Grade will clean Thursday

Students may want to bring an additional bag for accumulated school work or personal belongings.

6th and 7th graders are to keep their locks for the following year, so remember to write down the combination, and store it in a safe place to have for the 18-19 school year.

8th graders may take them for high school or donate them back to the school.

THE SUMMER BRIDGE PROGRAM:

The 2018 Summer Bridge program is held at Capuchino High School from Monday through Friday, June 25 - July 20.  (No School on July 4.)

The program is for students who will attend and take Algebra 1 at Capuchino High School during the 2018-19 school year.

Traditionally, the students in our Summer Bridge program are those who may need a bit of extra support to be successful in math and in school.

Our program will accept up to 25 qualifying students, on a first-come/first served basis.

The application deadline is Wednesday, June 12, 2018.

The school day is from 8:30 AM - 12:30 PM, in classroom A-202.

The Summer Bridge teacher is Robert Flores.  (I am helping Robert procure Summer Bridge participants and get the program up and running.)

The Summer Bridge program is free for the students.

Upon successful completion of the program, the students receive five (5) elective (high school) credits.

The students receive a free Tee-Shirt, snacks, field trips, and more.

One of the main goals of the SBAS program is to offer in-coming 9th graders, who plan to attend and take Algebra 1 as 9th graders at Capuchino during the 2018-19 school year, an opportunity to develop their skills in math, problem-solving, critical thinking, and (individual and group)communication.

The hope is when the students begin their high school experience at Capuchino, they are comfortable in their new setting, more familiar with some of the teachers and staff members, and better prepared to successfully pass Algebra 1.

In addition to being an academic program, SBAS also provides students with lots of hands-on activities, computer access (via various math programs), group challenges, field trips, guest speakers, and more.

PLEASE see attachments for more details!

Dear Parkside Parents and Families:

It’s almost time for our Book Fair! Reading for pleasure inside and outside of school has real and long-lasting benefits. It unlocks the power of information and helps kids discover who they are.  Here’s what you can do to help your middle schooler develop stronger reading skills and a love for reading:

  • Set the example. Let them see you read.
  • Have a collection of books in the home. Update this collection routinely to keep pace with changing tastes and reading skills.
  • Support our school’s Book Fair by purchasing books and volunteering to help. To volunteer please email Ms. Colleen Ahuna at cahuna@sbpsd.k12.ca.us
  • Support our teachers by purchasing books from their wish list.

Our Scholastic Book Fair is a reading event that brings the books students want to read to school. It’s a wonderful selection of engaging and affordable books for every reading level. Please make plans to visit our Fair.

Book Fair Dates: May 21-24th

Hours: Monday and Tuesday 8:15-3:00 p.m. (Set times for students to come with their class and open every day during lunch). On Wednesday open after school from 12:35- 2:00 p.m. and Thursday 1:40- 3:00 p.m.

Special Event: Open House 5:30-6:45 p.m.

We look forward to seeing you at our Book Fair! Remember, all purchases benefit our school.

Sincerely,

Kerry Dees and Colleen Ahuna

Colleen Ahuna a cahuna@sbpsd.k12.ca.us

Horas: Lunes y Martes 8:15-3:00 p.m. (Establecer horarios para que los estudiantes vengan con su clase y abran todos los días durante el almuerzo). El miércoles abre después de la escuela desde 12:35- 2:00 p.m. y Jueves 1:40- 3:00 p.m

Evento especial: Casa abierta 5:30-6:45 p.m.

From Capuchino Director Mr. Souza:

Hello Parkside 8th Grade Band and Orchestra Students.  I look forward to working with each of you as you transition to Capuchino High School.  If you are interested in auditioning for the Advanced Symphonic Band or Chamber Strings I will be holding auditions the weeks of April 23-27 Monday - Friday and April 30th thru May 2nd Monday through Wednesday in the Capuchino Music Room.  Please have your parents email or call to make an appointment for an audition.  My email is tsouza@smuhsd.org, Music Office phone - 650-558-2734.

AUDITION PROCESS

  1. Parent email or call to set up an audition appointment,
  2. Students should come in prepared to play Major Scales up to 4 sharps/4 Flats and the Chromatic
  3. Have a prepared selection of music that shows off technical ability as well as musicality i.e. dynamics and phrasing, correct articulations
  4. Each student should plan for a 20-minute audition time so that there can be some discussion following.  When parents arrive, I will ask to talk with them and the student immediately following the audition process to discuss what they should expect in the coming year.

Students who do not wish to audition for the advanced ensembles will remain in the Concert Band and Concert Orchestra class.

All Band Students should plan to attend the Marching Band Camp to be held August 1-7, 2018.

Any student interested in Color Guard should also plan to attend the Marching Band Camp.

Welcome to Capuchino Music,

Mr. Souza

Free fair tickets for San Mateo County
elementary and middle school students

Free admission and carnival ride tickets are for the taking for students who reside in San Mateo County.

Three unique student-focused programs are offered by the San Mateo County Fair that promote reading, education and affordable family fun.  The fair’s “Ticket to Fair” program offers a free fair ticket to every elementary school student in San Mateo County.  The “2 Books = 2 Rides”program provides two free carnival rides to students 8th grade and under who complete book reports.  And the fair’s “Free Class Tours” features a tour of the fair, including time with the animals and reptiles. In 2017, more than free 24,000 tickets were distributed to students.

“Our fair offers numerous discounts throughout the season, but the highlights of our promotions are these that are student-focused,” said Dana Stoehr, CEO of the San Mateo Event Center and Fair.  “We strive to provide a diverse experience through education, inspiration and entertainment at our fair.”

Ticket to Fair Program: This outreach program works directly with elementary schools in San Mateo County. The program is open to all elementary school students, grades kindergarten through 5th grade, including public, private and homeschooled students. To receive complimentary tickets for the 2018 fair, complete an order form by no later than May 1. The form is available online at sanmateocountyfair.com.

2 Books = 2 Rides:  The literacy program is sponsored by Butler Amusements and is for students in 8th grade or below.  To participate, students must receive their teacher’s approval of the books. After reading two books, the student must submit two book reports in exchange for two complimentary carnival ride tickets. Book reports may be redeemed at the fair’s Guest Services booth in the kids’ carnival area. For more information regarding this program, and detailed rules, visit sanmateocountyfair.com.

Class Tours:  This program provides a behind-the-scenes tour for schools still in session and seeking an exciting field trip.  Tours include a private visit to the livestock barn, the Rainforest Adventure with exotic animals and reptiles, and the Butterfly Experience where kids can feed the butterflies. The guided tours also include a stroll through the Expo Hall, filled with thousands of creative exhibits.  At the conclusion of the tour, each student receives a free fair ticket, good for a return visit with their family. Tours are limited to classes only and must be requested by the homeroom teacher.

To schedule a school tour, or for more information on any of the fair’s student-focused programs contact Justin Aquino, fair operations manager, at (650) 574-3247, extension 325, or jaquino@smcec.co.

The San Mateo County Fair is the Peninsula’s premier community event for Bay Area family fun and entertainment. The 2018 fair opens June 9and runs through June 17. The San Mateo County Fair strives to provide a diverse experience through education, inspiration and entertainment. The annual Bay Area fair represents a celebration of our community's talent, interests, innovations and rich agricultural and artistic heritage. The 2018 fair is themed “We Build the Fun.”

Discount tickets admission, carnival and season passes are now on sale at sanmateocountyfair.com#SMCF2018.

Public Relations Department of Mills Robotics Team 253 representing Mills High School.

This year, Mills HS Robotics Team is hosting a Middle School Outreach program at Mills High School in April. S.M.A.R.T., or Students Making Awesome Robotic Technology, is welcoming incoming freshmen to come and learn about robotics. We hope to educate this year’s eighth graders in the basics and interest them in joining a robotics team in the future. With this short program, our goal is to have freshmen coming to high school with some prior experience and an excitement for innovation and learning.

S.M.A.R.T. is a four week program that will introduce them to Electronics, Programming, Construction, and Public Relations. Meetings will be held every Saturday from April 15 to May 5 this spring.

MRT 253 prioritizes inclusivity and STEM education. We strive to provide a fun and stimulating environment for students to learn. Each and every member is taught how to succeed in their department of choice, and everyone receives a fun and educational experience. They learn important skills applicable to the future and to the workforce.

Dear Parkside Families-

Today, students were presented a lesson on a our school wide positive behavior program!

This past year, staff has been collaborating to create an incentive program to encourage, teach and promote safe and responsible behavior guidelines for our students. Our launch today included a student and staff created video, displaying desirable, and humorous undesirable behaviors in the common area on our campus, such as the hallways, stairwells, lunch lines, front office and cafeteria. A short lesson followed, and students were then presented with "Panther Paws", which they can earn by showing Respectful, Responsible and Safe behavior.

We are planning weekly prize drawings that currently include free dress and free cross country passes. Monthly drawing prizes will include gift cards!

Please see attachment for details and ask your student about it!

Fondly,

Team Parkside

Dear Parkside Families,

Please remember to take our district climate survey.

The Parent survey is also posted on the SBPSD website, and is available in both Spanish and English.  Our goal is to have more 50% of our parents respond to the survey.  For families who have children enrolled in more than one school, they may choose to respond to the survey more than once - but it is not required.

Please respond by January 19th. Your input is valuable!
